Breaking The Cycle One Link At A Time

Fatherhood Program

Transitions is a program designed to assist young fathers in recognizing the gift of fatherhood. Along with learning to see fatherhood as a gift of life long responsibility, young fathers will be educated, guided, and supported during a six week in- class course program that promotes independence, safety, and financial stability. Transitions give young fathers the emotional tools that are necessary to raise a healthy child through infancy, adolescence, and teen years. Transitions course is focused on addressing the needs of the community which is a lack of appropriate fathers. The Transistions curriculum is founded on the principles of family systems, life span development and creating long term change.  Its flexibility allows it to be easily tailored to all stages of being a father for diverse populations and varied settings. We recognize the importance of helping to strengthen the relationships between fathers and mothers, children and fathers and even husbands and wives. Transitions looks to rebuild the family structure as a whole and that includes those families where the father may not be physically in the home.  Parenting skills cannot be developed or significantly changed through exposure to a single parenting series but rather through continued involvement in classes in a supportive environment throughout the child rearing years.

Transitions program Goals:
  • GoalL #1 Assisting fathers in understanding there role as a parent
  • Goal # 2 Developing trust within the family
  • Goal # 3 Communicating within the family
  • Goal # 4 Understanding parenting and power
  • Goal #5 Accepting and growing through natural transitions in the life cycle
  • Goal # 6 Accepting and growing through unexpected transitions in the life cycle
The transitions program serves dozens of young fathers in the Richmond and surrounding areas. Each course is a six week program in the class setting that  accommodates 8-12 students per class.

Transitions is intended to assist young fathers in effectively fulfilling their roles as parents and productive members of society. Transitions was developed over a number of years as use in the peer support groups that were conducted for low income noncustodial fathers. The curriculum is a rich source of useful, down-to-earth material organized into (six week) sessions on dealing with issues such as male-female relationships, fathers as providers, managing conflict and anger. As Recent studies have shown the increase in single parented home are on the increase and far too often it is single parented home with the father being the absentee parent. This directly correlates to at risk children, poor self esteem in children, financial hardships, and increased crime rates, Transitions program is designed to restore “old fashion values” and encourage and educate young fathers to be full time proud fathers. Upon sucsessful completion of the course each father is placed with a fathering mentor.

We also offer 2 weekend workshops per month for children ages 13-19. The workshops focus on working with teens who are parents and those at risk of becoming young parents. Topics discussed are:
